Conoscenze e abilita' da acquisire: Target skills: Develop critical thinking and innovative natural resource problem-solving skills; Work, learn, and apply knowledge and skills in an interdisciplinary environment; Engage in active, student-directed learning that will prepare students for professional life; Refine written and oral communication skills

Knowledge: broaden student understanding of landscape ecological processes in relation to pest and pathogen spatial dynamics and management
Modalita' di esame: Written exam: MCQ and short answers (50%)
Practical: Individual project on a case study (30%)
Critical reading and discussion of scientific papers (20%)
Criteri di valutazione: There are four key assessment criteria:
1. Knowledge (30%): Knowledge of the topics presented during the lessons (body of the course)
2. Analysis & Interpretation (30%): Demonstration of a clear grasp of the concepts. Application of appropriate methodology in different contexts; ability to apply an independent approach or interpretation outside the cases presented during the lectures.
3. Structure (20%): Demonstration of the ability to structure a work (written or oral) with clarity, relevance and coherence; ability to extract the key messages.
4. Presentation (20%): Ability to clearly present a problem or a topic with accuracy of grammar and spelling; correct and clear presentation of charts/graphs/tables or other data. Appropriate and correct referencing throughout.
Contenuti: This course will deal with modern landscape ecology applied to understand the spatial dynamics of pests and pathogens and to develop pro-active landscape management. The course will provide a landscape perspective to the students, integrating their knowledge on more traditional local management of pests and pathogens. The course will also provide an in-depth understanding of the ecology of exotic invasive pests and pathogens relevant for agriculture.

The course is structured in four units:
1) Landscape ecology: introduction and scale; causes of landscape pattern in agricultural landscapes; introduction to models; landscape metrics; spatial statistics
2) Tools in landscape ecology: available free GIS-tools
3) Invasion ecology of alien pests and pathogens: pathways, trends; establishment, spread; management
4) Pests and pathogens and landscape patterns: spatial dynamics and landscape management for sustainable control

During the course the students will develop a case study around a real pest or pathogen problem tackled with a landscape approach.
Attivita' di apprendimento previste e metodologie di insegnamento: The main planned learning activities and teaching methods include: lectures by teacher; problem solving or case studies through individual project; reports on published research studies by students; student group discussion; one-minute paper and other student self-assessment activities during classes
