Syllabus

Caratteristiche comuni al Corso Integrato

Prerequisiti: Required foundation courses: none
Conoscenze e abilita' da acquisire: Analyze, understand and apply the relevant laws on the welfare of wild and laboratory animals.
Learn and develop skills to understand and discuss the ethical dimensions of animal care and welfare in all different fields.
Modalita' di esame: The exam will consist of a written test based on multiple-choice, case studies discussion and oral examination.
Criteri di valutazione: The student will be evaluated on the basis of the acquired knowledge in relation to its ability to use and present the concepts and topics learned during the course.
Student is expected to gain experience in legislation data analysis and to deal with ethical questions both on a theoretical and a practical level.

Caratteristiche proprie del modulo

Contenuti: The Course covers:
1. An Introduction to skills and tools for critical reasoning and decision making process in Ethics
2. An Introduction to the ethical approaches to animal welfare issues
3. A survey of the main practical issues of animal care, welfare and animal ethics in the field of animal use A focus on lab animals and Wildlife and Conservation Ethics
Main course unit contents will be:
1. Ethical skills
• Critical reasoning and decision making
• Ethical tools
• Identification and analysis of morally challenging situations
• Awareness of multiple perspectives on contested issues and development of coherent principles of thought and action
• Ethics committee

2. Theories and Concepts
• Ethical theories and Moral values on Animal Welfare
• Human-animal bond and animals in society
• Different uses of animals

3. Animal welfare ethics:
• Concepts and description
• main practical issues of animal care, welfare and ethics in the field of animal use
• Limits of animal use: 3R tenet and protocol design and evaluation
• Wildlife Ethics and Conservation Education

• Debate and discussion

Learning Objectives
1. To develop skills in critical thinking and decision making in ethics
2. To understand the ethical dimensions of dealing with animal care and welfare issues in professional life
3. To Use the knowledge and tools gained to deal with ethical questions both on a theoretical and a practical level
