Syllabus
Prerequisiti: Basic knowledge of political science and EU governance and institutions.
Conoscenze e abilita' da acquisire: The course is aimed at understanding:
• the functioning of the policy process in relation to key EU policies
• the roles and interests of key actors
• the future challenges for the EU and the opportunities and challenges that they present for governments and actors outside government.
Students will acquire specific analytical skills in terms of writing and problem-solving.
Modalita' di esame: Written exams with open questions.
Two options:
- general exam and class presentation;
- general exam and submission of an essay on the day of the written exam. The grade breakdown is as follows:
- Group presentation (max 3 people) or individual written assignment: 40%
- Final exam: 60%
The written assignment (essay) will have to be 4,000 words long.
Criteri di valutazione: The assessment methods have been designed in order to stimulate active involvement in the course and to develop a mix of knowledge and specific verbal communication/writing capabilities.
Contenuti: The course provides the main analytical tools needed to understand the nature of EU decision-making, the agenda setting and implementation processes of key EU policies, and the roles and interests of the main actors involved in those. The first part of the course addresses the key EU policies and their interaction with the domestic policies of EU Member States. The second part of the course will focus on the key actors that engage to shape those policies. The interaction among EU institutions, policymakers, stakeholders and decision-making processes is discussed using political science methodological tools and analytical approaches. The course concludes with a reflection on the future challenges facing the EU and the opportunities/barriers that they present for governments and actors outside government.
Attivita' di apprendimento previste e metodologie di insegnamento: The course uses a variety of teaching methods, such as:
• lectures
• group discussions
• discussion of case studies
• interactive sessions with invited speakers from the EU policymaker and stakeholder communities.
Eventuali indicazioni sui materiali di studio: The course draws on a variety of reading materials including scientific publications as well as EU strategies and policy documents.
A full list of compulsory and recommended readings will be made available
at the beginning of the course; however, key readings will include selected chapters from the volumes listed below and the Oxford Politics Research Encyclopedia.
